Upgrading to HMC V7 R7.2.0 from lower HMC releases can require special upgrade steps. Find basic steps and instructions for upgrading the HMC to HMC V7 R7.2.0 from lower releases, including from HMC 6.1.2 through HMC 7.3.5.0.

Upgrading to HMC 7.7.2.0 from lower HMC releases

This package represents the Update image that can be used to update your HMC from V7R7.1.0, or higher, to HMC V7.7.2.0. You can also reference this package by APAR MB03365.

Package notes

• HMC Model 7310-C03 cannot be upgraded to HMC Version 7.7 If an HMC is used to manage any POWER7 processor-based server, the HMC must be a model CR3, or later model, rack-mount HMC or a model C05, or later model, desk-side HMC.
• When IBM Systems Director is used to manage an HMC or if the HMC manages more than 254 partitions, the HMC should have a minimum of 3GB of RAM and be CR3 model or later rack-mount or C06 or later deskside.
• HMC Version 7.7.1 supports managing a maximum of 48 servers (non Power 590/595 models) or 32 IBM Power 590/595 servers with a maximum of 1024 partitions across the managed servers.
• The following HMC System Plan functions are not implemented for servers based on POWER7 technology:
  • Create system plan (mksysplan) capture of VIOS provisioning info (storage pools, etherchannels, shared ethernet adapters)
  • Deploy system plan Auto-install of VIOS, AIX and Linux partitions.
  • Auto-provision storage pools, shared ethernet adapters and etherchannels by system plan deployment.

    Activates, disables, or modifies a password policy for the HMC

• A new option, --trace, has been added to the chhmc command to provide Kerberos authentication logging to help debug Kerberos authentication failures.
• The chhmc command has been enhanced to support SLP service registration IP address configuration.
• The chhwres and lshwres commands have been enhanced to support Active Memory Mirroring for Hypervisor (POWER7 servers only). The following commands have also been added:
  • lsmemopt

    Lists information, including status and progress information, about the most recent mirrored memory defragmentation operation that was started

  • optmem

    Performs mirrored memory defragmentation operations

• The chsyscfg and lssyscfg commands have been enhanced to support setting and displaying the TurboCore mode (some POWER7 servers only).
• The chhwres and lshwres commands have been enhanced to support setting and displaying the System Partition Processor Limit (SPPL), which is the maximum number of dedicated processors supported per partition (some POWER7 servers only).
• The following commands have been enhanced to support Quality of Service (QoS) priorities for virtual Ethernet adapters (POWER7 servers only): chsyscfg, lssyscfg, mksyscfg, chhwres, and lshwres.
• The following commands have been enhanced to support user specification of the MAC address for virtual Ethernet adapters (POWER7 servers only): chsyscfg, lssyscfg, mksyscfg, chhwres, and lshwres.
• The following commands have been enhanced to support controls on virtual Ethernet adapter and logical HEA MAC address overrides specified via the operating system (POWER7 servers only): chsyscfg, lssyscfg, mksyscfg, chhwres, and lshwres.
• The chhwres command has been enhanced to support dynamically changing the properties of a virtual Ethernet adapter which is assigned to a running partition (POWER7 servers only). The properties that can be changed are the IEEE 802.1Q setting, the virtual LANs, and the Quality of Service (QoS) priority.
• The lssyscfg -r lpar command has been enhanced to display RMC connection information.
• The chsysstate command has been enhanced to support network install for IBM i partitions (POWER7 servers only).
• A new option has been added to the updlic command to reboot the service processor.
• A new option has been added to the updlic command to perform hypervisor and partition firmware activation.
• The following commands have been added to support monitoring managed systems using SNMPv3 (POWER7 servers only):
  • chsvc

    Changes the configuration of the SNMPv3 service on the HMC

  • lssvc

    Lists the settings of the SNMPv3 service on the HMC

• The following commands have been added to support virtual LAN (VLAN) statistics collection for managed systems (POWER7 servers only):
  • chstat

    Changes the HMC settings for VLAN statistics collection

  • lsstat

    Lists VLAN statistics collected for a managed system and the HMC settings for VLAN statistics collection

• The chsyscfg command no longer supports setting the power on speed or power on speed override for POWER7 servers at the 7.2 firmware level or later.
• On POWER7 servers,the mksysplan command no longer gathers information from Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) partitions.

General

• Increased the JVM heap size and adjusted the thresholds used by the HMC monitors of memory usage. This enhancement reduces the number of E332FFFF error codes reported through call home.
• Dynamic System Partition Processor Limit Support gives the System Administrator a means to change the maximum number of dedicated processors supported per partition by changing the SPPL value. The Administrator will be allowed to change only the Next SPPL value , the current SPPL value will be populated with next SPPL on a system IPL by the FSP. It's only available only on POWER7 795 platform.
• Added the ability to Enable/disable Turbocore for servers that support this feature from the HMC. System IPL is required for the new value to take effect.
• Enhanced SNMP support for HMC.
• Removed the existing fast/slow IPL options and replaced them with the autonomic IPL settings.
• CLI command support for i5/OS network install.
• CoD enhancements including support for larger processor minute values.
• Support dynamic edit of some virtual Ethernet properties such as supported VLANs.
• CLI support for enhanced password policies on the HMC.
• Active Memory Mirroring for Hypervisor: Supports PHYP memory mirroring. Allows the user to enable/disable PHYP memory mirroring on the system. An optimization tool for memory defragmentation is also included. Active Memory Mirroring for Hypervisor is an option which mirrors the main memory used by the firmware. With this option, an uncorrectable error resulting from failure of main memory used by system firmware will not cause a system-wide outage.
• HMC V7R7.2 introduces HMC controls and policies for MAC address assignment to partition virtual Ethernet and logical Host Ethernet adapters (LHEA). Using the HMC, you can optionally specify a custom MAC address for virtual Ethernet adapters assigned to a logical partition. You can also apply controls on virtual Ethernet and LHEA MAC address overrides specified at the operating system level.
• Provide QoS (Quality of Service) Support for virtual Ethernet adapters.
• Power Off Confirmation: A confirmation step has been added to the Power Off UI sequence. This step is presented when the Power Off task is selected and partitions are active within the system. IBM recommends that you first shut down partitions before powering off the managed system. However, you can choose to continue to power off the managed system. Additionally, if you attempt to Power Off the system but do not have access to all of the partitions in the system, then the Power Off task will not be allowed. You must have the "All Resources" access associated with your role to be able to power off the system.
• New Service Focal Point function
• New RV tasks added for tracking all MES results, and use of MES/WCII documentation for physical repair instructions in place of R&V panels for selected 9117 fru's. New function has been added to Repair & Verify for Concurrent Maintenance Hardening. For MES procedures the CE is required to enter the MES number before starting an MES operation. New MES menu tasks on the HMC (Open MES, Close MES) display a dialog box to enter the MES number. The MES number is then used to record results of the MES operation and send data to IBM upon completion. Also for selected systems and FRUs, the CE is directed by R&V to use the hardcopy install/remove instructions provided as part of the MES documentation, instead of the traditional guided instruction panels displayed on the HMC by R&V. For the 720 release the systems and FRUs directing the CE to hardcopy instructions are:
  • 9117-MMB (Feature Code 78C0-001): Concurrent MES for Memory Dimm add, GX Adapter add, and CEC enclosure add only.
  • 9179-MHB (Feature Code 78C0-001): Concurrent MES for Memory Dimm add, GX Adapter add, and CEC enclosure add only.
• New Enterprise B2B VPN Inbound Connectivity Method.The B2B VPN offers some flexibilty to clients who cannot or do not wish to establish a remote support connection from the HMC to IBM for technical support purposes. Under special contract, you can choose to purchase a dedicated VPN connection between IBM and you company. With this option, IBM technical support can have access to your HMCs and also allow the HMC to accept incoming connections over the B2B VPN. To pursue this option, you should contact a business partner or an IBM marketing representative.

The following fixes are included in this package:

General fixes

• Fixed a problem where "No results were found" was returned when listing virtual I/O SCSI resources on the command line with the "-F --header" options.
• Added a more explicit error message when attempting to migrate a shared memory partition to a managed system that doesn't support shared memory partitions.
• Added a log entry to the HMC console log when a partition is shutdown using the immediate option.
• Added the ability to dynamically add/remove partial processor increments from the GUI task.
• Added the ability to remove the logical ports of non-functional Host Ethernet Adapters (HEA's) from a logical partition's profile
• Applied a connection timeout for call home remote connections to automatically cancel requests hung for more than eight hours
• Fixed an internal error (ACT01503) from occurring by preventing multiple VPD collection requests from starting simultaneously.
• Fixed a problem where a scheduled operation created with only one repetition, and executed immediately, remained in the Scheduled Operations table and would execute again
• Added function to prevent an HMC restore of backup critical console data from an earlier version backup than the currently installed Recovery base image Version and Release.
• Added more details to the Fast Activate panel to include partition name and id, a warning sign. and to not display "Activating partitions" pop-up when there are no bootable partitions.(744234)
• Updated the Processor Panel and Memory Panel in the CEC Properties Panel to display more details and statistics.
• Fixed a problem where error HSC02928 with details "0931-007 You have specified an invalid drc_name".occurred when moving a slot from an OS400 partition to an AIX/Linux partition
• Fixed a problem when trying to remove multiple virtual adapters that could result in an error message,HMCERRV3DLPAR020 with details of an add attempt instead of a remove.
• Fixed a problem when a physical IO adapter is already assigned to the source lpar and a DLPAR move attempt is made. The message text incorrectly showed an error moving the adapter to the partition when it should display that the adapter must be unconfigured from the source before the dlpar operation can succeed.
• Reworded error msg ( red text is new) 0688 "HEA DLPAR Recovery Failed for these Operations. {0}. Some operations might have succeeded despite the above errors. The lshwres command can be used to verify this."
• Correct an issue with TAGGED IO panel not showing host Ethernet adapters when creating an iSeries partition that uses full system resources.
• Fixed a problem when removing 5250 CPW on i5OS would instead add CPW, if no change was made to processing units, error message HSC007DE may be seen as a result
• Add a warning message about using paging devices for more than one purpose simultaneously.
• Removed improper size limit on AMS lpars and profiles created with the GUI.
• Fixed a problem with the migration recovery operation failing with errors HSCLA318 & HSCLA239 for the case when the destination managed system connection is removed in the middle of migration and then connected back later.
• Fixed a problem with an internal error ACT01503 occurring when 1000 partitions are selected for the partition shutdown operation.
• Fixed the error message for a failed partition migration operation caused by a code update operation. It will return "lock mgr is not active, stop retry" instead of returning HSCL2521 There was a failure in the HMC Repository
• Fixed a problem of a partition stuck at the reference code 2005 after a migration operation when there is no VIOS partition with a bridged VLAN setting that can host the virtual Ethernet adapter of the migrating partition on the target managed system.
• Fixed an issue that would cause a system plan deployment to hang if the client's hostname contained a non-alpha-numeric character.
• Fixed a problem where error HSCL350B The user does not have the appropriate authority occurred when a user executed the CLI command "chhwres" with the options "-o s -r mem" along with "-p" or "--id" options,
• Fixed the add CPU operation., if the number of processors obtained is not enough to meet minimum requirement, the HMC will now display the error message to user: "The quantity to be added exceeds the available resources. "
• Added function to allow LDAP configuration to use a different attribute name for user login name instead of default "uid".
• Fixed a problem with LDAP user authentication failure when ldaps:// is used along with binddn/bindpw and an invalid or empty certificate is specified in ldap.
• Added performance improvement for "lshwres -r virtualio --rsubtype fc --level lpar"
• Fixed a problem to now allow mkhmcusr --script option
• Fixes a problem where a E3550046 SRC was generated if a HMC Recovery install was performed on an HMC that was not managing any systems.
• Fixed a problem where Collect VPD incorrectly displayed a DVD as output source even though no DVD drive is installed
• Removed unneeded 'select' checkboxes on system table on code update accept confirmation panel
• Fixed a problem to the Identify LED column label so its consistent through out the Identify LED flow.
• Fixed an issue with the Transmit Service Data panel where, after clicking Reset, the available Virtual Retain files available for transmission was not properly refreshed until the panel was exited and re-entered.
• Fixed an issue with dhcp server function on the HMC that required an additional reboot to be fully functional
• Fixed a problem with partition activation resulting in an incorrect error HSCL0292 describing slots for trunk adapters, Virtual LANs, and overlap requirements that was inaccurate and prevented the lpar from activating successfully.
• Fixed an issue where mksysplan fails to create with error: findHEAInstallEthernetByDRC() Exception Occured:Failed to set ethernet adapter used for VIOS install.
• Fixed an issue with viewing sysplan to populate all the Assignments section to list more than just physical disks used as backing devices.
• Fixed an issue with sysplan to deploy HEA logical ports correctly on POWER 770 and 780 systems.
• Fixed a rare problem where redundant HMCs could get out of sync and would show different running memory values for an LPAR when calculated for LMB size of 64 or higher.

Repair and Verify fixes

The following Repair and Verify fixes apply to IBM Power 570, 575 and 595 servers (POWER6-based technology) and IBM Power 770 and 795 servers (Power7-based technology).

• Fixed a problem when performing Add FRU for 5791 drawers to list multiple types (5797-5798) and (5791-5794).
• Fixed a problem with missing Repair and Verify steps for removing/installing the GX Cables and GX Cable Holder when performing an exchange, add, or remove of a GX Card on a (8202-E4B) or (8205-E6B) system.
• Fixed the removed GX cable connection instructions from the GX add flow which are applicable only for GX exchanges.
• Fixed the display FRU Identify LED on/off state in HMC to display correctly irrespective of the FRU Fault LED state.
• Fixed missing I/O enclosure add panels for POWER7 systems.
• Fixed RV procedures so REMOVE of a Memory DIMM on a POWER 570 or POWER 770 system is not allowed anymore and prevents error PBCmErrorHandlerPanelBean panel which states "Concurrent Remove Fru Not Supported" and delays the procedure.
• Fixed a problem where the I/O cable connection procedure for POWER 575 showed POWER 595 information
• Changed instructions for connecting 12X cables during installation of a 5798 I/O enclosure in POWER 575 system
• Fixes a problem where the 5803/5873 drawers Air Moving Device (AMD) LEDs would not light when the blue button was pressed
• Fixed a problem where certain I/O expansion unit slots were not being displayed for POWER 595 systems
• Handle completion status processing when Servers and Frames are targeted together for updates
• Fixed the Repair and Verify Panels for exchanging the Air Moving Device to have the correct word "Rear" instead of "Front".
• Changed the current error message from "NOT_APPLICABLE" to instead indicate that there is no reserved slots during installation of a GX adapter
• Updated the Repair and Verify procedure for Power 595 servers to include a panel to plug the UPICs into the BPD.
• Added more explanation of BPA marked with "*" in Repair and Verify exchange Panel.
• Added the procedure to use Service Support tool while exchanging DIMM in Repair and Verify panels for POWER 595 systems.
• Updated explanation of installing DIMM with tophat in Repair and Verify Panel for POWER 595 systems.
• Fixed the Repair and Verify Panels for exchanging the Bulk Power Fan to have the correct word "Rear" instead of "Front".
• Added description and recovery procedures to Repair and Verify Concurrent Maintenance for PHYP rcs 0x0202 (Loss of redundant path to disk) and 0x0203 (Loss of mirror protection).
• Fixed Repair and Verify for DCA repairs to no longer ask that the system be powered down.
• Can now turn off Active Memory Expansion from HMC GUI after the trial has expired.
• Lslogon command is now localized for its time format.

This package has the following known issues:

• A system plan will not be created correctly if there is FC2053, FC2054, FC2055 SSD on the system.
• A change in the imbedded OS device drivers may cause the network adapters to be re-numbered if the HMC is reinstalled on the 7042-CR5.
• When the SPPL value is changed from a higher value to a lower value (64 to 32 in this case), the processor configuration in PHYP for the partition still retains the previous value even after a CEC re-IPL. This condition breaks the current HMC resource-stealing logic because "SET_PENDING_LPAR_PROCESSING" related calls fail with an extended error code on the partition, because the value being set cannot exceed the SPPL value.
• The HMC may run out of memory when displaying a very large amount of utilization data either via the Web UI or the HMC command line (the lslparutil command). When the HMC runs out of memory, the Web UI displays an error indicating that connectivity to the console has been lost. The lslparutil command fails with the error "HSCL8016 An unknown error occurred while trying to perform this command. Retry the command. If the error persists, contact your software support representative." The HMC may need to be restarted.

  Workaround: On the Web UI, specify a short time interval between the beginning time/date and ending time/date for the events, or specify a small maximum number of events. When using the lslparutil command, use the -h option to specify a small number of hours, or the -n option to specify a small number of events.

• If the Mover Service Partitions (MSPs) used in partition mobility operations have multiple IP addresses, then you may experience a significant performance degradation for partition migration operations, partition migration validation operations, and the lslparmigr -r msp command. This issue is caused by the additional connectivity tests performed between each pair of source and destination MSP IP addresses.

  Workaround: Turn off the MSP attribute on any VIOS partition that is not needed as an MSP for partition mobility operations. For partition migration operations and partition migration validation operations, you can specify which source and destination MSP IP address you wish to use for the operation.

The following browsers have been tested.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0 is supported.

• Internet Explorer 7.0 is required if you are using IPv6 addresses on the network interface over which the browser is connected.
• Internet Explorer 8.0 is not supported; however, the Internet Explorer compatibility mode seems to alleviate most problems.
• If your browser is configured to use an internet proxy, then local internet addresses should be included in the exception list, consult your network administrator for more information. If you still need to use the proxy to get to the Hardware Management Console, enable Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections under the Advanced tab in your Internet Options window.

Firefox 1.5.0.7

Note: For Firefox 2.0 make sure the JavaScript options to raise or lower windows and move or resize existing windows are enabled. To enable these options, go to the Content tab in the browser's Options dialog, click Advanced? next to the Enable JavaScript option, then select Raise or lower windows option (a check mark appears) and Move or resize existing windows options (a check mark appears). These features allow you to switch easily between HMC tasks.

Other web browser considerations

Session cookies need to be enabled in order for ASMI to work when connected to HMC remotely. The asm proxy code saves session information and uses it.

Internet Explorer

1. Select Tools -> Internet Options
2. Select Privacy tab and select 'Advanced'
3. Check if 'Always allow session cookies'
4. If not checked, check 'Override automatic cookie handling' and check 'Always allow session cookies'
5. The handle First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies, you can choose either block or prompt or accept. Pprompt is preferred, in which case you will be prompted every time a site tries to write cookies. It may be a little annoying, but it is the safe thing to do. Some sites need to be allowed to write cookies.

Firefox

1. Tools -> Options
2. Select Cookies Tab
3. Select check box Allow sites to set cookies.
4. If you want to allow only specific sites then select 'Exceptions' and then you can just add this HMC to allow.

Note:

The HMC Install Corrective Service task has been modified to allow corrective service installation by using the .iso packaging of the corrective service files that you can download from IBM. There is no requirement to burn CD-R or DVD-r media in order to use these files to install the corrective service.

• To install the updates over the network, select the .iso file in the Select Service Package panel of the Install Corrective Service utility.
• To use USB flash media to install updates, copy the .iso file to the flash media, and then select the file when prompted.
• The updhmc command line command has also been modified to use the .iso file for installing corrective service updates. To use the command, follow the syntax in this example:
  updhmc -t s -h <myservername> -f </home/updates/corrrective_service.iso> -u <HMC_username> -i

In all cases, the HMC application extracts the files needed to install the corrective service.
